Vet Visits & Emergency Care
Nobody wants to imagine their little one getting sick while they’re away — so we’ve thought it through for you, down to the drive.
Every House of Guineas pet caretaker is trained in exotic animal care, and our veterinary-informed team brings backgrounds from wildlife rehabilitation to exotic veterinary hospital work. Sometimes a vet trip is planned — a checkup that happens to land while you’re traveling. Sometimes it isn’t. Either way, whether your pet is boarding with us or being cared for in their own home, the same steps kick in the moment something seems off — no matter which of our caretakers is with them.
Our Vet Visit & Emergency Care Process
1. We notice early
Exotic pets hide illness — it’s how they’re wired. A guinea pig skipping a meal, a bird sitting fluffed at the bottom of the cage, a bearded dragon a little too still under the lamp: their pet caretaker knows these subtle signs from hands-on veterinary training and watches for them at every visit. It’s the difference between “she seemed fine yesterday” and catching a problem while there’s still time to act. See the emergency signs we watch for and why veterinary experience matters.
2. You hear from us right away
The moment something seems off, we reach out — call, text, and photos so you can see exactly what we’re seeing. Every conversation is guided by the emergency preferences, preferred veterinary hospital, and medical authorization limit you set with us at your meet and greet, so there’s never a question about what you’d want.
3. We find the right hospital for your pet
Not every vet sees exotics, and the right choice depends on the moment. We weigh how urgent things are, call around, and choose thoughtfully — sometimes the closest option so your pet can be stabilized quickly, sometimes a bit farther for the right exotic vet — always within what you’ve authorized. Our directories of Bay Area and Peninsula exotic vets are the same lists we work from.
4. When minutes matter, your pet comes first
In a life-threatening situation, we act. Their pet caretaker gets your pet admitted and stabilizing first, then reaches you immediately to walk through everything together. Even when time is of the essence, we still review the options and confirm next steps with you — the goal is always to stabilize your little one and make the next step the right one.
5. We handle the trip
Safe, calm, temperature-controlled transport by someone trained to handle exotic pets — for scheduled checkups and emergencies alike. Your pet rides secure, warm, and as unstressed as we can make them.
6. We speak the vet’s language
Clinical experience means their caretaker can clearly relay symptoms, history, appetite, and behavior changes to the veterinary team — and gently advocate for your little one while they’re being seen.
7. You’re never in the dark
Updates, photos, and plain-English explanations at every step — from the first “something seems off” message to the ride home.
8. No billing surprises
The hospital’s bill is passed along at cost — never marked up. Our care time and transport are itemized separately and explained clearly, line by line. Emergencies, longer distances, and holidays can add to the cost, but everything stays within the authorization limit you set with us. You’ll always know what you’re paying for, and why.
It All Starts at Your Meet and Greet
Your meet and greet is where we get to know you and your little ones — and where we write down the three things that guide everything above: your preferred veterinary hospital, your emergency preferences, and your medical authorization limit. Five minutes of planning now means calm, confident decisions later.
